Product Description
Freelance writer Jaine Austen is moving on up! A cushy new advertising gig promises champagne wishes and caviar dreams, but Jaine soon discovers she's not the only one in town who's making a killing...Without a job or a date in sight, Jaine is equally out of luck in finance and romance. So when her friend Lance offers to treat her to brunch at the Four Seasons, Jaine leaps at the chance like a fashionista at a pair of half-price Louboutins. They've barely made it through the menu when Lance spots his friend Bunny. Dressed like a million bucks - and probably worth twice that - Bunny is the new trophy wife of mattress maven Marvin Cooper. When Bunny generously offers Jaine a gig writing Marv's new advertising campaign, Jaine accepts the job, and an invitation to her upcoming soiree. But at the party Bunny cruelly rules the Cooper mansion with a fist full of martinis, abusing terrified staff and her browbeaten husband alike. It seems like this society girl could use a good kick in the assets. Indeed, before the evening is over, someone poisons the D-cup diva. Dead must be the new black. The police arrest Lance, but Jaine knows his murderous urges end at her closet door. She sets out to clear his name and discovers a list of suspects longer than Bunny's credit card bill. Did Mattress Marv get tired of his little bunny hopping into another man's bed, or did a jealous boy-toy fix her a fatal cocktail? Marv's ex-wife Ellen has plenty of motives for murder, as does Bunny's harassed maid Lupe. Or was it Bunny's seething stepdaughter who sent her to that Great Shopping Mall in the Sky? Jaine is running out of time. Jobless, Lance is losing his mind and taking it out on Jaine's apartment, wardrobe, and indignant cat Prozac. And before Jaine can say 9021Oh-no someone else is murdered. Between a house guest that won't leave, a suitor-turned-stalker, and killer on the loose, Jaine's jackpot may turn out to be fool's gold.

3 out of 5 stars A Fair Book   July 25, 2010

This was my first Jaine Austen book. I didn't mind the first person narrative style except when she would actually speak to the reader ("and for those of you who remember...."). I found the parent emails to be incredibly pointless since they had absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the book. Jaine's obsession with food and tendency to eat out and then wonder why people refer to her ass as fat took away from the story. It wasn't the worst book I've ever read but I am glad that I got it as a free download.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful and funny   July 22, 2010

This book is so funny I found myself laughing out loud like a crazy person. The main character is a single woman living in a duplex with her cat. Her next door neighbor is a gay fashion buyer for a swanky department store who constantly nags her on her wardrobe choices. He invites her to a party thrown by a rich customer. When the hostessw is murdered at her own party and her neighbor is accused of murder, she begins snooping to find the killer. The author throws in amusing feline observations, and the character's relationship with her parents and her pesky gay neighbor add to the comedy. I could have done with less of the emails from her parents, but if you skip them, you aren't missing any of the main plot. Great summer laughing material.

2 out of 5 stars Not much of a story (some spoilers)   July 15, 2010

I have been a fan of Laura Levine's Jaine Austen series ever since I have read her first book. This latest novel was not one of my favorites. I am getting pretty tired of Jaine's obsession over food. Sometimes I think her character has become more dumb. She doesn't even stand up for herself if someone is being pushy, rude, or just plain mean to her. She should get more of a backbone. Many characters in the book kept blaming her for the most stupid things. She just lets them yell, threaten, or give her bills for damage. I didn't find much of a mystery and I stopped halfway through the book and it took awhile until I decided to finally finish the book. It mainly revolved around her food addiction, her parents emails, and her unwanted admirer Vladimir. (Jaine, my beloved!) It seemed like they stuck the "killer revealed" part at the very end as an afterthought. I would have enjoyed it more if they kept the goofy romance part to a minimum, stop the parent emails once in awhile, keep her focused on the murder and leave out the food obsession. Make her a little more clever instead of being a dimwit. I just felt it was too choppy, slow, and not much mystery.

1 out of 5 stars A chore to get through this one   June 27, 2010

I don't like to not finish a book, and for that reason, I stayed with it. I will say that the author has a witty style, but even that wasn't enough to really hold my interest.

I wanted to find out who the murderer was, but by the time I did find out, I really didn't even care anymore. I just wanted to get to the end of the book.

The emails from the character's parents did nothing for this book. After the first few, I stopped reading them entirely.

The main character writes toilet ads for a living. She's a sloppy dresser, and the entire book was filled with her obsession with food. There was nothing about this character that would make me want to learn or read anything else about her.

Was this supposed to be a comedy or a mystery novel? I haven't even figured that out because most mystery novels have some suspense to them. This one had none of that.

I hate to give bad reviews because I know an author puts a lot of effort into writing, but this book just wasn't worth the read. Thank goodness I got it as a free Kindle download, or I would have been extremely upset that I spent money for it.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!   June 26, 2010
You might want to read this one in the privacy of your home as LOL might be embarassing in public. The characters in the book are just that, characters. This was my first Janie Austen novel and have already bought another one.
